Email marketing offers incredible opportunities for healthcare practices, including dental offices. This is especially useful in attracting new potential patients as well as engaging with existing patients.

However, it’s a hard fact that many emails are never opened — or that the open rate falls short of your expectations.

That’s where the email subject line is critical. These tips will help you write email subject lines to get optimal results.

#1 – Email Subject Line Character Limit: Your subject lines should be 60 characters — or nine words, roughly. This brevity will improve your “open rate” on both mobile devices and desktops.

#2 – Work on Your Style: A bland subject line with no personality won’t get any attention. You must learn to infuse your email subject lines with your voice and unique style – reflective of your practice’s brand. You might include emojis, use local slang, or use an authoritative, informed voice.

#3 – Create a Sense of Intrigue: If readers are not intrigued, they won’t open the email. You must pique their interest with just a few words — possibly by adding urgency or curiosity.

#4 – Personalise: Emails can seem impersonal, so try using the customer’s personal details in the subject line — like first name, birthday, or reference to a previous purchase. This will give them the sense the email was created just for them.

#5 – Use Proven Buzz Words: Research shows that  email subject lines with the best conversion rates often include the following words:

  • Jokes
  • Promotional
  • Congratulations
  • Revision
  • Forecast
  • Snapshot
  • Token
  • Voluntary
  • Monthly deduction
Examples of Cold Email Subject Line Formats

#6 – Use Proven Formats: Certain subject line formulas have been tested by marketers and found to be successful. These include:

  • “Quick question about [x]”
  • “[Your name], we’re looking forward to seeing you at [x] event!”
  • “A [x] way to [x]”
  • “Are you prepared to overcome [x]?”
  • “Let’s talk about [x]!”
  • “[Your name], I need your help”
  • “Let’s connect”
  • “Before you do [x], read this”
  • “You’re missing out on [x]”
  • “[X] surprising things about [x]”

#7 – Use Numbers: Using numbers in your email subject lines can have the same effect. Numbers attract attention and encourage curiosity.

Email marketing can prove to be very effective, with good email open rates. With only a small percentage of sales emails ever getting opened, it’s vital that you perfect your writing technique for subject lines for cold emails.
